How to block a web page in Google Chrome

How to block a web page in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is still one of the most used browsers in the world. Despite its constant updates, natively, the browser still does not allow blocking of web pages, to prevent access to any address we have selected.

Therefore, we can use third-party tools to carry out this process, so we must explain how they work and where we can download them. Similarly, despite the limitations of Chrome, we will teach you to block some of the web content from the browser itself.

Block pages in Google Chrome with BlockSite

BlockSite is one of the simplest and most capable Chrome extensions in the Chrome Store. The operation is as simple as downloading it and adding the URL we want to block in your list.

In the same way, we can go further, blocking pages by words, requiring a password to enter websites (a function more than useful for work applications), add a work mode to block web pages and not be distracted for periods of time (pomodoro method by default), etc.

Block web pages in Google Chrome with tinyFilter

Although its title shows a clear orientation towards blocking adult websites, tinyFilter is an extension that allows you to block access to any website. We can block by URL, by words, add a white list, add passwords and so on.

At the interface level it is not as current as BlockSite, but it is simpler, for those who like to have all the options concentrated on one page.

Block web pages from Google Chrome

Although we cannot block a web page as such from Google Chrome, we can try to block access to some of its contents. To do this, we go to the Settings menu, and follow the steps that we will show you below.

Click on the drop-down menu of ‘Advanced Settings’
Click on ‘Privacy and security’
Click on ‘Content settings’
Block ‘Images’ and ‘JavaScript’

Through this method, we tell the browser not to load the page by restricting JavaScript and downloading its images. In the same way, we can block access to the microphone, motion sensors, video and others, with the aim of having more control over the permissions accessed by the web.

However, this is not the most appropriate and infallible method to block web pages per se, so, as we anticipated, the best solution is to use third-party tools.

It is not a blockage of the website as such, since we can continue to access the pages, but they will not appear on Google again.

The operation is as simple as installing the extension and, once we are on the web page whose search result we want to block, click on ‘block’. Once we do this, we will not see the page in Google search results again.

In recent months, Chrome not only received a new dark theme, but Google also launched a dozen official themes that allow us to give the browser a personal touch by changing its main colors.

Now, with the arrival of Chrome 78, these customization options are going to grow a lot, since now we can create our own theme for Chrome directly from the same browser, a bit in the style of what Vivaldi offers, although less advanced.

How to try the new Chrome theme creator

Now, this feature is only available in Chrome 78, which is currently the Canary branch. So you need to install that version of the browser before. Once you have Chrome Canary, you need to enable a couple of features.

In the address bar type chrome: // flags and you should look for three experiments and enable them. Their names are:

NTP ustomization menu version 2

Chrome Colors menu

Custom color picker for Chrome Colors menu

Once you have enabled them all, restart your browser. Now, on your new tab page you just have to look for the Custom option that appears in the lower right corner:

This will take you directly to the new personalization menu of Google Chrome. This has three sections: Background, Shortcut combinations, and Color and theme:

For the background you can choose from a wide variety of images in the gallery or you can upload one directly from your computer, and you can also check the option to update every day so that it changes automatically.
